STRATEGY

RHIYA in Bangladesh was built on the achievements of the RHI and the project aimed at consolidating these efforts with an exclusive focus on adolescents and youth. During the RHI only one project focused on ARH (executed by SCF). RHIYA Bangladesh addressed a series of problems identified through the review process, experience and lessons learned from the RHI as well as stakeholder consultations and sectoral reviews in the context of the UNFPA Country Programme.

Young people lack the opportunity to exercise their right to information and assistance on SRH (including appropriate counseling) and necessary support from parents and community leaders; they suffer from persistant gender discrimination within the family and society; a lack of respect and protection (particularly for girls) offered through the legal system; insufficient engagement by government with NGOs and community groups on ARH issues and the resistance of communities to adolescent and youth participation in planning and decisions on social development.

The major problem areas addressed by the RHIYA in Bangladesh were:
A. Insufficient knowledge and awareness due to lack of access to information on of SRH issues
among youth.
B. Inadequate coherent advocacy to gain support for youth oriented sexual and reproductive
health:
C. Insufficient/inappropriate access to youth-friendly clinical services and the quality of services for
young people.
D. Weak technical, managerial and institutional capacity at local level to address sexual and
reproductive health needs of young people.

The RHIYA in Bangladesh covered 33 months for output projects implementation
