Just for Young People: Establishing the First Youth Centre in Laos ; presents the ground-breaking work of the Vientiane Youth Centre managed under the auspices of the Vientiane Women’s Union to address young people’s reproductive and sexual health needs through education, services and personal development.

The practice was selected because :

  • The Centre, in collaboration with UNFPA, has been effective in building organizational and participatory programming capacity for young people’s reproductive and sexual health. A viable organization and extensive programs have been established, increasing young Laotians’ access to essential information and services.
  • The quality of the capacity building and training efforts was particularly high: needs and technical assistance were well-matched; the level of input was decreased appropriately but incrementally as capacity was built; and training was followed up with long-term coaching and with mentoring and technical support. This capacity was built in a context where youth-driven work was an innovation.
  • The Centre has achieved major steps towards sustain ability with the development of a strategic plan and fund-raising capacity, resulting in the diversification of its sources of support.

For Themselves: Sex Workers Preventing HIV in Laos describes the work of CARE International to reach young women in sex work in Vientiane with sexual and reproductive health education and to empower them to use it to protect themselves.

The practice was selected because :

  • The project successfully established a network of very capable peer educators among young sex workers.
  • The quality of the education provided is high. The educators are open, engaging, and knowledgeable and use interactive methods to convey information and skills relevant to the situation of their peers.
  • The project has made progress towards sustainability by developing strong ties with local government authorities and by diversifying its funding sources.
  • The project is replicable and at least 2 other international

NGOs have already developed similar projects.
