The RHIYA Nepal started in September 2003 with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UNFPA and 7 partner NGOs (AMK, BPMHF, EHDAG, FPAN, Phect, Samjhauta and SPN). RHIYA was implemented through the 7 NGOs in close collaboration with concerned government agencies, whereas UPSU assisted UNFPA in establishing and strengthening linkages between RHIYA partners, national RH programmes and existing initiatives. RHIYA Nepal was mainly implemented in deprived rural areas: project activities were planned in 93 Village Development Committees (VDCs) and 7 municipalities, located in 19 districts. The programme was designed for vulnerable people aged 10-24, but also targeted awareness and skill development activities of health workers, teachers, community leaders, parents, community groups and other Community Based Organizations (CBOs). The RHIYA strategic framework identified 4 main outputs in Nepal: 1. Increased gatekeepers support for ASRH actions to prevent HIV/AIDS and reduce gender base violence; 2. Enhanced knowledge and awareness on SRH and AIDS and improved assertiveness on gender issues and girls trafficking; 3. Enhance access to quality SRH information and services for A/Y; 4. Enhanced capacity of RHI partner NGOS/CBOs to manage and sustain ASRH activities, information and services.
