STRATEGY

The RHIYA in Pakistan aimed to contribute to the improved adolescent reproductive health and well-being of young people and adolescents in Pakistan. In common with the other RHIYA countries, it aimed to achieve this through increasing community, family and political support for ARH interventions and increasing awareness among youth themselves to increase demand for services. It also aimed to improve access to appropriate youth friendly services and to build capacity among Government and local NGOs to implement services.

Building on the achievements and lessons learned of the RHI, it has increased the focus on gender aspects, on an improved training curriculum, volunteer training, closer collaboration with local authorities and strengthened community based distribution.

The main target group was vulnerable young people in the 15-24 age group, who were reached through the 80 Youth Friendly Centres established by the RHIYA partners. This was the main programme strategy that all RHIYA Pakistan projects had in common. These Youth Friendly Centers were social spaces which encouraged young people's empowerment by promoting social, intellectual and life skills development through a wide range of activities and services. The RHIYA partners were responsible for promoting these activities and for supporting the implementation and maintenance of the youth friendly centres in five districts.

The major problem areas addressed by the RHIYA in Pakistan were:

  • A. Lack of understanding and support from family, community and other key gatekeepers for ARH interventions and low level of support at the policy level for ARH.
  • B. Insufficient knowledge and awareness among youth about reproductive health issues
  • C. Inability of young unmarried.people to access quality youth-friendly reproductive health services including counselling.
  • D. Limited capacity of Government and LNGOs/CBOs to effectively address ARH issues.
  • E. Lack of understanding of underlying issues and lack of available of qualitative data on ARH.
