The RHIYA programme in Pakistan started on 1st April 2004 with the aim to contribute to the improved adolescent reproductive health (ARH) & well-being of adolescent and youth (A/Y). RHIYA also aimed to improve access to youth friendly services (YFS) & to build capacity among Government and local NGOs staff to implement the program.
In Pakistan, the RHIYA programme envisaged 4 projects including 3 substantive ones (MSS, PAVHNA and SACHET) and a support project (UPSU). Interventions were implemented in 5 districts across Pakistan. The main target was vulnerable A/Y aged 15-24; however, partner NGOs remained flexible in benefiting the young people below the age of 15. The main core of activities was identical for all the 3 projects: they were responsible for promoting RHIYA activities especially through community level advocacy and supporting the Youth Information Centers (YICs) implementation and maintenance, in order to create an enabling environment for ARH interventions. These activities remained a constant challenge due to the patriarchal and conservative context of the Pakistani society.
Four outputs had to be achieved in Pakistan: 1) Increased political, community and family support for adolescent RH interventions to create an enabling environment; 2) Enhanced awareness and knowledge of ASRH issues among target young people; 3) Increased availability of an access to quality SRH services for young people in target areas; 4) Enhanced technical, planning and managerial capacity for local provision of youth friendly SRH services.
